Evaluating geopolitical risk: lessons from history for building portfolios today

Geopolitical risk is expected to remain elevated in the years to come. The decades immediately following the Cold War saw greater global cooperation that enabled increased capital and trade flows between countries, leading to higher economic growth, lower inflation and a relatively stable environment for investors. While we are far from peak geopolitical risk by historical standards, an increasingly multipolar world presents a less stable economic and investment environment that could see a reversal of many of these benefits.
